Course Description

This course offers an advanced (Level 3) and detailed knowledge about the nature, scale and response to child sexual abuse and reminds us why it should be embedded into our professional thinking. As such, participants should already have a good understanding of child sexual abuse and  have current practice knowledge.
Developed in partnership with NSPCC Together For Childhood, Plymouth Safeguarding Children Partnership and  Plymouth City Council Children’s Services  the content will use the very latest research, provide practical assessment and response tools and consider the impact abuse can have on children, families and communities. Each session is co-facilitated by social work colleagues in Children’s Services Learning Academy and Plymouth Safeguarding Children Partnership Business Unit.

 Participants will:

1. Develop their understanding of signs, symptoms and types of abuse
2. Understand how children show us and tell us how they are being harmed
3. Be able to have conversations with children & families to ensure they receive the right help at the right time
4. Look at tools to aid identifcation, assessment and responses to child sexual abuse
5. Consider and apply lessons from local and national Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews
6. Consider responses to children and adults who show sexually concerning behaviour

Pre Course Preparation

In the session we will be exploring a range of resources from the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse. Prior to attendance please familiarise yourselves with two of their resources called Signs and Indicators of Abuse Template and Communicating with Children Guide. The links below will take you directly to these documents.

Signs and Indicators Template

Communicating with Children Guide

We’re mindful reading through the resources can be quite powerful. Perhaps think about when is a good time for you to explore them and have enough space for reflection or support and if needed the time to move into your next commitment.

If you would like to speak to someone prior to the course please feel free to contact Caroline Wilson, Lead Officer for Learning & Development with the Plymouth Safeguarding Children Partnership at caroline.wilson@plymouth.gov.uk or 01752 305917.
