The Duluth power and control wheel was originally created to describe the abusive behaviours used by men causing harm in their intimate partner relationships with women. There have since been other wheels developed to describe domestic abuse in a range of relationships, including a wheel recognising post-separation abuse.
The Duluth equality wheel was initially created to describe the changes needed for men who use abusive behaviours in intimate partner relationships to move from being abusive to part of a non-violent partnership. It has since been adapted to cover a wider range of relationships.
It can be helpful to look at the behaviours in each segment of the power and control and equality wheels with the victim/survivor, and ask which of these they see/experience in their intimate partner, ex-partner and family relationships.
Which wheel feels more like your relationship with your partner, ex-partner, family member?
How much of your relationship are highs/good times and how much are lows/bad times?
