Safety Planning Advice for Professionals

• Establish a safety word or phrase with the victim/survivor so you know when it is safe to talk.

• Establish safe methods of ongoing contact so you can follow up and support other agencies to safely make contact after onward referral.

• Record information carefully – be mindful of who has access to records and prioritise preventing the person causing harm from accessing information which may increase risk to the adult and child survivors.

• Trust your professional judgement.

• Regular risk review (at least every 12 weeks and after new incident).

• Consider what information needs to be disclosed or reported to other agencies for safeguarding or safety purposes.

• Consider your own and other practitioners’ safety – share information about known risks e.g. home visits where person causing harm is present, any weapons or firearms present at the address, stalking and monitoring involving devices in the home or on phones and other portable devices.
