Hidden Harm Training

Hidden Harm: Face to Face Course Full Day 09:30 – 16:30 (Arrival and Registration between 09:00 and 09:25 for a 09:30 start)

Course Description and Outcomes

This one day course will support professional knowledge and skills in working with the impact of adult substance use on children and families i.e. Hidden Harm. The course will explore what is meant by the term “hidden harm”, why this harm is seen as being hidden and the reasons behind this.  This course will also provide information on the effects of different substances, Adverse Childhood Experiences and the long term effects of childhood trauma.

Delegates will also learn how to assess risk from substance use to both the individual using substances and their family. The day will conclude with information about services that are available to support individuals and families affected by substance use.  The day will include case studies and group activities to consolidate learning. Participants will:

  • Increase knowledge and understanding around why this harm is “hidden”.
  • Raise awareness of substance use and its effects.
  • Understand Adverse Childhood Experiences and the long term effects of trauma.
  • Find out how to assess risk from substance use to both the individual and the family as a whole.
  • Learn about the support services available. 

Who is this course for?

The course is suitable for anyone who is working with individuals/ families effected by substance use but maybe especially useful for Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Youth Workers, Teachers and Teaching Assistants.

How much?

There is a cost to attend this course for all partner agencies including the statutory and voluntary sectors. Some agencies have a pre-paid funding arrangement with us meaning the cost of attendance is already covered. These are:

  • Devon Integrated Care Board
  • City College Plymouth
  • Livewell Southwest
  • Plymouth Hospitals Trust
  • All Children’s Centre’s
  • All Childminders
  • All Nursery/Pre-school Settings

If you don’t work for any of the above agencies or services the cost to attend is £85 per person.
